European Lead, Seafood Markets
Laurent Viguie is the European lead on the WWF-US Seafood Markets team. Laurent is based at WWF Copenhagen and will work to introduce the TCR Traceability program to the WWF European network as well as the market place going forwards. This will include liaising with the Seafood Task Force. He will also help co-ordinate the WWF Denmark/ASC joint initiative relating to Vietnamese small holder shrimp co-operatives entering Aquaculture Improvement Projects (AIPs) on the road to ASC certification.
Laurent graduated from Cambridge University in England with a BA and MA in Law in 1982. Laurent practiced corporate law for nearly 20 years before leaving the profession in 2002. In 2003, Laurent bought a salmon farm in Shetland, Scotland, with the aim of becoming the world’s first cod farmer. The operation became the first cod farm as well as the largest producer of organic salmon and sea trout in Scotland. In 2008, Laurent moved to Brazil to become the marine aquaculture consultant to the newly formed Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture. In 2010, Laurent served as the country manager for MSC in Brazil and also joined ASC in 2013 as the Latin America representative. He was responsible for the sustainable seafood policy at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Prior to joining WWF, Laurent did extensive consultancy work for WWF and Conservation International in Brazil.
